A flowing cooperation

Project Goals

KNOWLEDGE about the status or the
ecological potential of transboundary water bodies, based on common criteria that allow evaluating the degree of conservation of water-dependent flora and fauna species and Habitats.

COORDINATION, Optimizing the methodologies and the data resources of the entities involved in water management and planning, and improving the tools for the shared management of transboundary natural resources.

AWARENESS RAISINGabout the importance of water resources in transboundary water&land as a joint source of environmental functions and
services, which must be protected and used in a sustainable way.

To achieve these objectives, the project addresses 6 activities:

Activity 1

Harmonization of methodologies for monitoring the ecological status or potential of WBs.

Activity 2

Monitoring the status or ecological potential of WBs for joint assessment.

Activity 3

Improvement in the integration of the objectives of the WFD and the HD.

Activity 4

Increasing awareness about cooperation in shared river basins.

Activity 5

Financial management of the project, coordination, and evaluation and monitoring of results.

Activity 6

Integration of the communication and image plan, web page and seminars.

Scope of action

4 international river basins

Minho-Sil, Douro, Tagus and Guadiana.

The shared water bodies, rivers, reservoirs and transition waters in the 4 river basin district, have been chosen as the scope of action. The inclusion in this INTERREG of the “coastal waters” category bodies is not proposed, in order to effectively concentrate efforts on the rest of the bodies, where there are more potential methodological divergences.

This cooperation is based on establishing hydromorphological and ecological management mechanisms for water bodies, carrying out activities between institutions and working groups, adopting unified technical, legal and administrative measures between both countries.
